Overall Opinion:
After trying out HUM Nutrition Gut Instinct, I rate it 2.5 out of 5 stars.
It lands pretty much smack dab in the middle as far as probiotics go.
There are things I like and don’t like about it.
Let’s start off with some of the things I like.
First off, it’s super cool because this probiotic is considered a “skin probiotic” and is even sold at Sephora, which is awesome!
I like the pairing of probiotics for skincare because they’re really beneficial for all areas including our delicate skin.
The capsules are smaller than average and you only have to take 1 per day on an empty stomach.
These capsules are also vegetarian, vegan, and allergy friendly, all things I love to see in my probiotic!
I like the probiotic strains used in this formula and noticed a difference in my skin and overall digestion.
Now for the things I don’t like about this probiotic supplement.
It is very potent and I definitely saw some side effects within the first week of taking it.
I had a bellyache, gas, and bloating, which is never fun!
HUM Nutrition also doesn’t have a true guarantee and you only get store credit if you open the bottle and try it out, not ideal at all. :(
You also have to refrigerate this probiotic, so it’s not super convenient.
They also don’t include a prebiotic in their formula.
And the probiotics are only guaranteed at the time of manufacture.
Overall, it ends up evening out to an average value probiotic.
The Details:
Ingredients/Strain Profile
Each capsule has 25 billion CFU and 10 probiotic strains.
The ingredients are all aimed to help regulate digestion, boost the immune system, and benefit the skin.
Roughly 60-80% of our immune system resides in our gut. And imbalances in our microbiome result in digestive problems and anything from depression and exhaustion to thyroid issues and skin conditions.
Some of these skin issues include eczema, acne, rosacea, and psoriasis.
These conditions are stem from inflammatory responses, which if you fix the gut, you fix the root cause of these problems in a lot of cases.
I like a lot of the probiotic strains in this strain profile.
In particular, I really like the inclusion of B. bifidum.
Studies show that this strain may help improve acne and other skin conditions.
B. bifidum is also known to help boost immune function, alleviate constipation, and help with symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Another strain I’m a big fan of is L. acidophilus.
This strain is also known to help improve acne and other skin issues like eczema.
L. acidophilus is a heavy hitter when it comes to belly problems, too, and helps alleviate stubborn digestive disorders like IBS, Crohn’s disease, and gut dysbiosis.
This probiotic has one particular strain I’m not too fond of, which is Lactobacillus casei.
Lactobacillus casei is a forceful bacterium that can overrun other “good” bacteria by occupying areas that other probiotics might have taken in the belly.
This supplement also lacks a prebiotic (aka fuel for the friendly bacteria) and that is a bummer.
Allergy Concerns
I’m happy to see that HUM Nutrition Gut Instinct is very allergy friendly.
This is a huge concern of mine so I’m always thankful when probiotics are safe for a wide range of diets and allergies.
These capsules have NO: wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, or peanuts.
The only thing is that this probiotic supplement is produced in a facility that processes other ingredients containing those allergens.
On a plus side, the capsules are vegetarian and vegan, which is fantastic!
They’re also non-GMO, sustainably sourced, and free of artificial colors and preservatives.
Price/Value
I bought HUM Nutrition Gut Instinct through their website.
On there, it costs $25 for a 1-month supply.
That works out to 83 cents per day to take these.
That’s just a bit above average compared to your everyday probiotic.
Unfortunately, they don’t have a guarantee so that brings the overall value down for me.
But I still think it’s a justifiable price for the value.
Side Effects
I did have some side effects while using this probiotic.
I felt bloated and had a bit of a stomachache and gas.
These side effects lasted about a week and then went away.
Side effects like mine are fairly common with more potent probiotics.
It’s definitely not fun. :(
But at least it doesn’t last forever!
Just keep this in mind though if you’re new to probiotics or have a sensitive stomach.
Guarantee
Unfortunately, HUM Nutrition doesn’t have a true guarantee.
This is a definite downfall. :(
But here’s what they offer their customers…
They state that customers will receive a full refund when they send back unopened products within 30 days of receiving them.
However, if products have been opened, customers will receive store credit when they send back the opened products within 30 days of receiving them.
Another issue is that they don’t refund shipping costs unless they’ve sent you the wrong product, and they don’t issue refunds or store credit past 30 days.
So I’m not super pleased with this “return policy”.
But it’s better than nothing!
