Overall Opinion:
I was really excited to try Moon Juice Probiotics because it’s different than your typical probiotic supplement (also, how could I not be intrigued with a name like “moon juice”??)
Sadly, my intrigue was busted and I rated this probiotic supplement a mediocre 2.5/5 stars.
So, what happened?
Well, it fell short in a few main areas for me.
Let me go over the basics for you.
This probiotic is unique because it’s a powder that you mix and drink (as opposed to a capsule or tablet that you swallow).
I like the mixable options for those that don’t like taking pills.
The directions are simple enough, just mix 1 teaspoon into a shot of water or juice.
It says you can also add into smoothies, ice cream, and iced lattes if you’re feeling adventurous.
Unfortunately, this powder would NOT blend easily for me.
No matter how much or little, hot or cold, water I used, it never mixed up all the way.
There were chunks and it was gross to swallow. It doesn’t have much of a taste but it reminded me of Metamucil’s FiberSure or Benefiber that I used to take.
So, major loss of points because it’s a mixable powder that doesn’t mix well.
It’s also super expensive depending on how you take it.
It suggests 1-3 servings per day and if you take 3 servings, it’s a whopping $2.23 daily cost (almost triple the amount of an average probiotic).
The strain profile isn’t as diverse as I like.
It has a custom 4-strain blend, but I like to see 6-8 different probiotic strains.
You also have to refrigerate the jar after you open it, which is something to keep in mind.
But I didn’t have any side effects with it and they give you a 30-day money back guarantee.
It’s also vegan, gluten free, and non-GMO.
So it has potential in some areas but definitely lacks in others.
The Details:
Ingredients/Strain Profile
Each serving (1 teaspoon) of Moon Juice Probiotics has 5 billion CFUs in a custom 4-strain blend.
The strains include: Dried L. Casei KE-99, Dried L. Acidophilus, Dried L. Plantarum, and Dried B. Bifidum.
The strains are “dried” because this is a mixable powder formula.
It has my favorite strain, L. Acidophilus, which is naturally found in the body.
L. Acidophilus is a heavy hitter for combatting common belly troubles like constipation, diarrhea, gas, and bloating. It also aids in digestion and nutrient absorption.
This strain has been shown to help prevent yeast overgrowth and guards against infections and diseases in the body.
An 8-week clinical trial showed that friendly probiotic bacteria, especially L. Acidophilus, helped boost mood and reduce depression, anxiety, and stress in individuals with depressive and anxiety disorders.
However, it also has beneficial consequences on mood and anxiety-like symptoms even with those without these disorders. So potentially anyone could benefit from these positive side effects.
Another strain I really like is B. Bifidum.
It’s been shown to help with digestive disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Ulcerative Colitis.
It’s also known to improve immune function.
B. Bifidum may help those with lactose intolerance because it encourages the growth of organisms in the digestive tract to help break down lactose and digest dairy products more effectively.
Both L. Acidophilus and B. Bifidum have been shown to help with overall skin health, improve the appearance of skin, and combat acne.
Allergy Concerns
Moon Juice Probiotics seems to be very allergy friendly.
I don’t see any allergy concerns listed.
It’s vegan, gluten free, and non-GMO.
All things I really like to see!
Here’s the full list of ingredients: Sunfiber, FOS (chicory root), Dried L. Casei KE-99, Dried L. Acidophilus, Dried L. Plantarum, Dried B. Bifidum, and Silica.
Price/Value
On the Moon Juice website it costs $38.00 for a 4.5 ounce jar.
You do have to tack on shipping, which was $6.89 for me for USPS Priority Mail (2 business days).
So it ended up being $44.89 total.
You can get free shipping but you have to spend $100+ on the order, which is a lot!
There are 17 – 50 servings in the jar; depending on how many teaspoons you take daily.
It works out to $0.76 to $2.23 per day.
76 cents is on par for daily probiotics but $2.23 is totally insane!
That’s so expensive!!
There are a few ways to cut costs if you want to try this product or end up really liking it.
For first timers, they have a 10% off coupon for your first order if you sign up for their online newsletter.
And they also have subscribe and save that’s $34.20 + free shipping that gets automatically delivered to you once a month.
I still think it’s pricey, but at least you have a few options!
Side Effects
I didn’t have any side effects with this probiotic, so that’s a plus!
This supplement is pretty “clean”.
It pretty much just has the active ingredients and doesn’t include a bunch of crazy, unnecessary additives.
As always, I’d suggest starting out small and working your way up if you’re new to probiotics or have a sensitive stomach.
Start out with 1 teaspoon per day and gradually work up to 1-3 teaspoons daily if you need the extra help.
Guarantee
Yes!
Moon Juice has a 100% satisfaction guaranteed policy.
If you’re unhappy with the product, just email [email protected] with “RETURN” in the subject line.
Then include the item you want to return as well as the reason you need to send it back and they will send you a return label.
Once your return is received it is typically processed within 2-3 business days.
I’m really happy to see a guarantee for this probiotic, especially since it’s on the pricier side.
