Overall Opinion:

I have to be honest with you… I had such a hard time rating this probiotic.

I wavered between 2 stars, 2.5 stars, and 3 stars.

I finally landed on 3/5 stars for TULA Skincare Daily Probiotic & Skin Health Complex.

But I really think this product could be 2 stars (or even less) for someone and 3 stars for another.

It really depends on your specific needs and current issues, whether it be skin, digestive, or a combo of the two.

Let’s rewind to the beginning and I’ll walk you through this specific probiotic.

I was SO eager to try this TULA probiotic because I’ve been seeing the TULA Skincare brand everywhere.

They definitely have a presence on Instagram and I always see their products or ambassadors while I’m scrolling through my feed.

TULA is unique because they include good-for-you probiotics in all of their products.

I absolutely love the inclusion of probiotics in skincare formulas.

They promote transparency in their products and use safe, clean, effective ingredients and leave out the toxic, harsh, irritating ones.  They don’t test on animals and are certified cruelty-free, which is a mega plus.

Their bread and butter is a wide variety of skincare products but they only have one skincare supplement, which is this TULA Skincare Daily Probiotic & Skin Health Complex.

It’s interesting for them to branch out and include an actual probiotic supplement and there are definitely hits and misses with it.

Let’s start with what I like about it and what they got right.

I love everything about the 100% vegetarian capsules.  They’re SO much smaller than the average capsule and are a breeze to swallow.

Just take 1 capsule daily with food.

The formula is very clean (like their skincare line) and is gluten free, soy free, NON-GMO, and free of artificial ingredients and preservatives.

The capsules come in a blister pack and you either love or hate this method compared to a typical pill bottle.

I personally love the blister packs because they’re diverse and perfect for travel or storing in different spots (bedside table, purse, gym bag, etc.).

The packs are perforated, too, so you can tear them into smaller portions anywhere from 10 to 1.

They don’t need to be refrigerated (more points!) and just store them in a cool, dry place, away from children.

I also think the blister packs keep the probiotics more viable because you only pop out one capsule at a time.

This keeps the capsules sealed off and protected from damaging air, sunlight, and moisture.

I’m a fan of all the skin nourishing ingredients used in this formula.

They used probiotic strains that are beneficial for not only skin health but digestive health, too.

I love the addition of ceramides, which are commonly found in topical skincare products.

Interestingly, some studies suggest that oral consumption of ceramides have the most optimal benefits because it provides a more continuous supply of ceramides.

This naturally helps support your skin’s ceramide stores from the inside out.

The probiotic also includes a high dose of vitamin C, which diminishes fine lines, protects the skin, and promotes collagen growth.

Now let’s flip over to the other side of this probiotic and go over what it lacks.

In a lot of cases, this is just an over glorified probiotic.

It’s formulated for digestive health and skin benefits, but it misses the mark as an effective probiotic.

It really needs more strain diversity to act as a proper probiotic supplement.

So, if you’re suffering from more than just the occasional digestive upset, this product most likely won’t be of much help.

The same goes for skin health.

And I had some side effects when I first started taking it and I read online that other users experienced breakouts that were worse than before.

It’s also VERY expensive.  I really don’t think the high price tag is justified by the quality of the product.

That’s why I feel like it’s an over glorified supplement.

If you have digestive issues or need more support, you can 1000% find a better suited probiotic for you and probably at a fraction of the cost.

So, with all that said, that’s how I got to the 3 star rating.

I do think it’s better than average and I’m fully in support of a probiotic that doubles as a skincare supplement.

Even though I don’t think this probiotic is right for everyone.

And luckily TULA offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee if you want to see for yourself, risk free.

The Details:

Ingredients/Strain Profile

TULA Skincare Daily Probiotic has a 10 billion CFU probiotic blend of:  Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103), Lactobacillus plantarum (DSM 6595), and Bifidobacterium infantis (SD 6669).

I like that they list the specific strain for each probiotic.  A lot of companies just put the genus and species but don’t list the strain.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the naming for Lactobacillus plantarum (DSM 6595).  Lactobacillus is the genus, plantarum is the species, and DSM 6595 is the strain.

It’s important to know the strain of probiotic you’re taking because probiotic strains have different health benefits and are researched separately.

For instance, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG has been heavily researched for its various health benefits including treating clostridium difficile, prevents diarrhea associated with antibiotic use, and aiding intestinal barrier function.

Whereas research studies for Lactobacillus rhamnosus PB01 show it’s beneficial for sperm motility, pain, and urogenital infections in women.

So obviously those are 2 very different strains with separate health benefits.

Let’s get back to the ingredients in TULA’s probiotic.

It has Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG, which is one of the top clinically studied strains to aid with digestive health.

Studies show that oral administration of Lactobacillus Plantarum has beneficial effects on skin health such as reducing the appearance of wrinkles, increasing skin hydration, alleviating atopic dermatitis, and treating skin inflammation.

Bifidobacterium infantis research shows it’s beneficial in significantly reducing bloating, pain, constipation, and relief of painful IBS symptoms.

The ingredients also include FiberSmart® (Tapioca), which is a prebiotic fiber that acts as food for the friendly bacteria.

It’s important to note that TULA Skincare Daily Probiotic & Skin Health Complex has some added ingredients that aren’t commonly found in your typical probiotic supplement.

It includes Ceramide-PCD® (Phytoceramides from rice).  Ceramides are one of skin’s building blocks and are crucial to skin health.  Ceramides help reduce the appearance of fine lines, encourage your skin’s ability to retain moisture, and increase collagen and skin cell regeneration.

Vitamin C is also included, and it naturally protects the skin with antioxidants, diminishes the appearance of wrinkles, heals damaged skin, and promotes collagen production.

Allergy Concerns

TULA does have traces of milk derivatives in some products.

It’s listed as lactose-free on the box and website but one of the customer service reps said in a comment that “Our Probiotics are not lactose-free.”

So, that’s a bit contradicting…

I think the customer service rep may have made an error in saying that.

I believe the supplement is lactose-free but not dairy-free.

It also contains tapioca and phytoceramides from rice.

Other than that, this probiotic is very clean and free of icky, unnecessary chemicals and additives.

The capsules are gluten free, soy free, 100% vegetarian (but not vegan), and NON-GMO.

There are no preservatives, artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners, sodium, or magnesium stearate.

The other ingredients include vegetable capsule and silicon dioxide.

Price/Value

One of the hardest things for me to get past with this probiotic is the hefty price tag.

The product itself is $39.00 on the TULA website.

AND you have to tack on shipping costs, which include:

USPS Standard Shipping (3-6 business days) – $7.00

UPS Ground Shipping (2-5 business days) – $10.00

UPS Next Day Air (1 business day) – $25.00

I chose the cheapest option, which was the $7 standard shipping.

So that puts you at a total of $46.00 ($39 + $7).

That works out to a whopping $1.53 per day to take these.

Just as a reference, anything over $1 per day is more expensive than average.

And another thing that drove me bonkers was that after I added the probiotic to my cart, it said “You’re only $1.00 away from FREE SHIPPING!”  (The product is $39, and you get free shipping for orders $40+.)

This is a smart marketing ploy!  I commend them for being tactical but it’s a little upsetting when you’re a dollar away from free shipping and have to fork over another 7 bucks.

And of course, nothing on the website is under $20, except for a $10 travel size (aka tiny 1 oz tube) of face cleanser.

They do have a few options for discounts.

  1. This one is the easiest.  You just plug in your email address on their website to opt in for their emails and you get 15% off your first order.
  2. The second is “share and save” and requires a bit more work. There’s a sign-up box and you pop your name and email in and send it to a friend to give them 20% off their first order.  The offer is only valid for new customers with a minimum purchase of $30.  You then get $20 off after their first purchase.
  3. The third option is signing up for auto-delivery, which saves you 15% and you get free shipping. It winds up being $33.15 instead of $39 + shipping.  You choose your frequency of either 25 days or 55 days.  They include a mystery FREE gift with every auto-delivery order (but I read online that the mystery gifts end up being the same each month).  You can pause or cancel any time and promo codes can’t be applied to auto-delivery items.

Side Effects

I did have some side effects when I first started taking this probiotic.

My stomach was bloated, and I had some belly pain, too.

The side effects went away after the first week, though.

On TULA’s website, they say that some people may experience side effects when first taking this supplement.

They call it an “adjustment phase” when using new products and that some people may notice more breakouts or digestive changes in the beginning.

If you’re experiencing this, they suggest slowing down the frequency and amount you’re using and slowly reintroducing the formulas into your routine, giving your skin time to adjust.

Guarantee

Thank goodness TULA has a satisfaction guarantee.

Whenever I see an expensive probiotic like this, it’s a must that the company can back their product.

TULA offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

If for any reason you aren’t satisfied with your products, you can return them for a refund within 30 calendar days of the purchase date.

They have an online form you can fill out to initiate a return.

Once your return is authorized, they’ll send you step-by-step instructions and a prepaid shipping label to your email address.

Returns take about 7-14 days to process from start to finish.

Once everything is processed, they will send you an email confirmation.

I’m happy their return policy is simple and straightforward and a definite plus that you don’t have to pay for return shipping.
