Overall Opinion:
I wish I could go back in time to write a high school research paper on ZEBORA Probiotic and Prebiotic Powder.
I feel like I could write a novel at this point and spoiler alert, it wouldn’t have a happy ending.
After a full-on personal detective investigation, I give this probiotic 1 out of 5 stars.
I WISH I could rank it lower if I could.
There’s so much I want to say, so I’ll do my best giving you my main issues with it.
First off, the more research I did on ZEBORA, the less confident I became in the legitimacy of this supplement and company as a whole.
I have little to no faith in the contents of this probiotic, accuracy of claims, and information listed for this product. They say things that just aren’t true, or they give no additional info to back it up.
For instance, they mention multiple times on Amazon and on ZEBORA’s website that the product has 4 organic prebiotic fibers. However, there’s only 1 listed (and it’s not even a commonly used one).
In the supplement facts, they list “Baby lactic acid bacteria” as being in the strain profile. I have absolutely NO idea what that strain is and have never heard of it in my life.
They say the probiotic is “DOCTOR FORMULATED FOR FAMILY”. On their website, it says: “Scientist Team – Our scientist team are from those outstanding scientists in Harvard Medical School and the doctors from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The leadership of the company are from those young scientists -MD, PhD in Boston area.”
The whole thing just seems like a big red flag.
There’s also just a lack of information and cohesiveness throughout. I’m not alone in my confusion over this product and company. There are hundreds of customer questions on Amazon and the answers are varying and seem like guesses. There are no hard answers to people’s questions and concerns.
Another huge factor for me is that I felt awful while taking this probiotic. I had the worst side effects that never went away until I finally stopped taking them. I had stomach issues, bloating, belly pain, and something just felt very off. I read other reviews and many other people experienced the same thing.
This probiotic says it has 50 billion CFU and 13 probiotic strains. That in itself is just too much and can cause more harm than good. They even suggest double that amount daily for adults.
The most concerning thing is that this probiotic is supposedly intended for kids!
Children as young as 6 years and less… They mention it all over the product, website, and description that it’s safe for kids and the whole family. Regarding probiotics, the American Family Physician Journal says common dosages range from 5 to 10 billion colony-forming units per day for children. This product has 50 billion CFU. Moral of the story is I’d advise against giving this probiotic to your child and always consult your pediatrician first.
And the greater moral of the story is to just avoid this probiotic and company at all costs.
A legitimate company would not leave this many questions and misinformation on the table.
I have one last note… ZEBORA Probiotic and Prebiotic Powder is listed with the coveted “Amazon’s Choice” banner. So let this be an important reminder to take Amazon rankings and reviews with a grain of salt and be sure to do your own due diligence!
The Details:
Ingredients/Strain Profile
Each packet contains 50 billion CFU and 13 probiotic strains. The suggested serving size is 1 to 2 packets per day.
They list on the jar that it’s “triple strength” and “maximum CFU count”.
This is just nonsense and WAY too much of everything. Too many CFU and too many strains. More is not always better for probiotics and these types of potent supplements can lead to icky side effects.
Lactobacillus reuteri (100mg) is one of the most abundant strains used in this formula. This strain has been shown to have antimicrobial properties that inhibit pathogens from colonizing, in turn benefiting the immune system. L. reuteri is anti-inflammatory and helps strengthen the intestinal barrier. These in turn help aid against inflammatory diseases, especially those in the gut.
Something that’s very odd to me in the strain profile is the inclusion of “Baby lactic acid bacteria”. I’ve tested and researched hundreds of probiotic supplements and I’ve never seen or even heard about a strain called baby lactic acid bacteria. I took it upon myself to research it online and I came up blank. I literally still have no idea what that strain is or why it’s in there. So weird!
Also, they list the amount per serving for the probiotic strains in milligrams (mg), not CFUs. However, I thought it was weird that they don’t list the total mg for the proprietary blend.
I added them up and got 502mg, which is 0.5 grams. The packet is listed as 2g each, so I’m not sure if that’s common to have such a big difference or if the other 2 ingredients take up that much space.
Another big problem I have is that this product is listed everywhere as being a Probiotics + Prebiotics powder. On the Amazon sales page and on the actual ZEBORA website, they list “4 kinds of Organic Prebiotics Fiber for the maximum effectiveness and benefits.”
That would be all fine and dandy but there’s only 1 prebiotic listed (Stachyose Tetrahydrate) and I had to research it to make sure because it’s not a common prebiotic. So, where are the other 3 prebiotics? I have HIGH concerns for the legitimacy of this company and their claims and what’s even really in the product.
Allergy Concerns
ZEBORA Probiotic and Prebiotic Powder doesn’t list any allergy concerns.
They say the product is gluten and soy free.
The other ingredients include: Glucose, Stachyose Tetrahydrate.
Price/Value
I bought this for $16.19 on Amazon.
They say the packaging may vary between a box or plastic jar but that the ingredients and inside packets are the same. Some Amazon reviewers claimed this isn’t the case and they were indeed different. After looking through a ton of reviews, I also saw at least 3-4 different versions and packaging from June 2019 to October 2020.
I got the plastic jar version and regardless of which one, both variations contain 30 packets.
The serving size is 1 – 2 packets per day, lasting between 15 and 30 days.
So, depending on how many packets you take, it works out to be $0.54 for 1x daily and $1.08 for 2x daily.
If you’re taking 1 daily, it’s actually on the cheaper side of probiotics (and you get what you pay for). But 2x daily is definitely expensive and not a good price for the value.
Side Effects
I really just felt awful while taking this probiotic.
I had stomach issues the whole time and something in this supplement is just so off.
My stomach would hurt and bloat not long after taking it and the pains just continued.
Upon further research, I realized I’m not alone and many other users experienced the same thing.
A lot of people were also receiving expired or poor-quality products and the company has been changing their manufacturers. Some people were even receiving bottles with no information, nutritional information, ingredients, etc.
Not to mention 50 billion CFU plus 13 strains (potentially double if you take the higher suggested serving size) is just WAY too much and usually causes stomach upset and side effects.
Guarantee
Luckily, ZEBORA offers a 60-day money back guarantee for this probiotic supplement on Amazon.
On the page it says, “Beware of probiotic supplements that don’t guarantee potency all the way to expiration as strains can be dead by the time you buy the probiotics.”
They add that they confidently back their probiotics with a 60-day full-refund guarantee.
If you’re not happy with the product, they will refund you the purchase price.
They don’t mention anything about shipping, so you may not get reimbursed for that.
I couldn’t find any guarantee information listed on their actual website so be sure to reach out if you buy from their site directly (www.zeborabiotech.com) and not from Amazon.
